Organizational Analysis

What's really going on here?
Your processes lack consistency--items are lost, customers forgotten
Your systems are far from systematic, so you repeat the same mistakes

Sales have been falling for too long, you're in deep trouble
Retention rates are horrific (why's everyone jumping ship?)
     Customer complaints are rampant
Morale has bottomed out--no one attended the company picnic
Projects keep failing, and you're not sure why

As a practitioner of holistic organization development (systems-based problem solving), I focus as much on the processes between the parts of an organization as I do on the parts themselves. I look for patterns rather than events and count on principles as much as verified facts from social sciences. I do not see single individuals as the source or only cause of breakdowns, but explore all aspects of a system and corresponding sub-systems to see how they created an environment which allowed something to occur.

My training is as a systems thinker, whether in therapy or organization dynamics, and thus unlike psychologists who focus on individual pathology, a family therapist (or holistic OA) looks up, down and around an individual (or organization) to see what factors contributed to the problem.

As an Organizational Analyst, my job is to seek the whole picture, understand all the variables and then derive possible options for improvement based on the organization's unique context. To do otherwise could prevent learning, inhibit innovation and ultimately stunt growth by focusing too narrowly on a single factor.

My methods for evaluating issues include individual and group interviews, reviewing internal documents, Internet research, and onsite observation. Deliverables come as written reports (Word, PowerPoint, PDF) and/or oral presentations.

APPLICATIONS

After-Action Reviews (aka Project Autopsies) -- when you need an objective analysis of what went wrong or why a project failed.

Strategic Assessment -- when you're preparing for a product launch or strategic planning and you need a deeper understanding of your core competences and/or competitive advantage

Startup Coaching & Business Planning

When putting together a new business venture or reinventing your business, there's a great deal that needs to be established. If you've never built a business from the beginning, you may miss important details, even unknowingly set yourself up for failure.

Having participated in more than 11 startups over my career, I've seen both good and bad and have learned what it takes to get a business successfully launched, from vision and mission to market positioning and obtaining your first customer, and I specialize in self-financed service-based businesses, such as consultants, agents and coaches. The needs and market for a services company are distinctly different from those of product-based businesses, and they must be approached in unique ways.

Whether working together over the phone, or hashing out ideas in a conference room, together we identify the basic business core, write a simple business plan, establish a marketing strategy, develop and test tactical plans and get your company off and running in the best way possible!

Strategic Marketing

"In a crowded marketplace, fitting in is failing. In a busy marketplace, not standing out is the same as being invisible." Seth Godin

With Strategic Marketing consulting, my goal is to help my clients be remarkable in the marketplace. Together we review how you've evolved as an organization, explore your unique differences, evaluate your competition and competitive mental angle (the differentiating factor that resides in the minds of your intended prospects), and plan for how to execute on your strategy.

I help you "position" yourself in the marketplace, identify which market you should target, and determine the "four Ps" in your marketing tactical plan. I achieve this through asking simple, meaningful questions that get to the heart of the matter and enable you to think proactively about who, what and how you are in the marketplace. More specifically, I ask questions that clarify and move you to action. Questions like:

--What makes your best customers "best"?
--What do you expect your best customers to expect of you?
--How are you alike/different from your competitors?
--Do you have a competitive edge? What is it?
--How will you execute this strategy? Who is involved? How do you keep them accountable?

If you don't know, we find a way to start finding out. You need to know your distinct benefits and how they're different from your competitors, and you need to know NOW. An organization cannot succeed by being ordinary...you must be remarkable to be remembered.

I promise you no complex charts, methods or models...just simple common sense and logic. No 100-page plans that sit on shelves, either...just short, realistic summaries with definitive action plans.
