I've been on a low-carb diet for almost 3 years and have seen the ups and downs, highs and lows of living a low-carb, sugar-free diet, believe me! Add to that the 2 years I was on a diabetic diet (started for gestational diabetes), and that's almost 5 years of living (almost) without carbohydrates. I took a break and tried low-fat living for awhile, but I slowly gained the weight back and just couldn't get it to go away, no matter how much I exercised and cut out fat. I soon went back to low-carb eating. I've been through what you're going through: I've heard EVERYONE tell me--from the medical community to the media to my best friends--that my diet is horrible for me. It seemed like everyone and everything was against me--I couldn't find support anywhere! Forget trying to eat out in restaurants, attend (or throw) parties or survive the holidays!! Just like any of my other programs or courses, the foundation of low-carb coaching are the principles of self-management success: creating the right mindset, building a plan and then working the plan you've built. Here's what we work on (it's in the book, too; see below):
The major work after weight loss is maintenance, and this is the hardest part. Most of us can survive an Atkins Diet Induction phase, but after the two weeks, we're back to our old habits with bagels, pasta and ice cream. To change habits, you have to change beliefs--what you tell yourself. You need to learn to associate pain with the old way of eating and pleasure with your new eating plan. You need workable strategies, the "how-to" of diet maintenance, to help you through tough times while you adjust to a new way of living.This is the primary work of maintenance. In a coaching arrangement--by phone, email or in person--I help you explore your thinking, challenge old habits and build new habits with advice, humor, and the knowledge that comes from doing it myself.
